Introduction to Multicultural Leadership (IML)
The Introduction to Multicultural Leadership is designed to help all of us develop deeper understanding, belonging, and respect.
We share a common goal, to help men get the most out of their experience of the ManKind Project. There are shared perspectives and human experiences that can demystify the differences between us – to know one another, to nurture curiosity, to humanize complex interactions, and to foster healthy humility.
Purposes of the Training:
- To introduce a model of Multicultural/Intercultural Competency that is useful for exploring issues at a deeper level— particularly regarding being an effective ally in the face of Racism, Classism/Ableism, Heterosexism and Cis-genderism, through the lens of MKP’s Gateway Trainings: Indigenous/BIPOC, GBTQ+ Gateway, Barrier Free Gateways.
- To teach a common language so we can have safer (less harmful), more productive conversations about these difficult topics.
- To open up conversation and reflection on our own isms & internalized oppression.
- To raise awareness of the ongoing impacts of systemic oppression in our world, as well as in our organization (MKP Trainings, I-Groups and Community events), and give participants tools to help end oppression
- To introduce ways we can be allies, advocates, and accomplices to/for those who are oppressed.
Intended Outcomes:
- Apply a model of Intercultural Competency through the lens of Specialized (“Gateway”) NWTAs.
- Demonstrate use of inclusive language on MKP trainings, I-Groups and Community events
- Teach and practice the use of the Ouch, Oops, and Whoa processes effectively
- List ways to act as an effective ally
- Discuss the lived experience of BIPOC, men with different abilities, and GBTQ+ folks in MKP and in the world
- Explain why and how MKP does Specialized (“Gateway”) NWTAs
- Define how we can confront issues of oppression and privilege in MKP and in our lives
This program is for you …

- You are approaching your 6th staffing for a New Warrior Training Adventure
- You want to understand yourself better in relation to your cultural identity
- You’re curious and ready to learn about other cultures
- You have have not yet learned about the Visions Model
This is just a starting point.
The emphasis throughout this four hour course is ‘No Shame, No Blame,’ and listening to learn.
Intercultural Competency, like MKP’s other core values, is not a destination – It’s a lifelong practice to learn more about culture and how to create and maintain relationships across cultures.
