The Door into MKP USA

Becoming a ManKind Project Brother …

Welcome!

There are some things to know as you take this next step closer to the ManKind Project. You probably already know something about the community, and the video below and the additional text and links are here to help you get oriented.

Take a look at the video and text below. Read along with the text, or listen to the audio files.

Welcome to the Brotherhood – Men’s Group

Welcome to your journey …

Does all this sound good? Here is your invitation.

After hearing more about MKP … Is there something that resonates in you with our Mission and Vision?

Do our Values speak to you?

Do you feel called to:

  • Belonging to a community of healthy, compassionate, respectful men
  • Pursuing a life of ongoing personal growth
  • Improving your relationships to self and others
  • Improving the world through service

And, are you ready for the challenge? The challenge to WAKE UP, GROW UP and SHOW UP.

Because becoming the man you are meant to be isn’t easy and it isn’t risk-free.

Our Mission, Vision, and Values

The Mission of MKP USA is to create a world where men act on their individual and collective responsibility for the future of humanity by initiating and supporting men on a path of emotional maturity, spiritual awareness, and deepening community.

Vision:

Our vision is a safe world where all men are brothers, in relationship with one another …

A world where conflicts are resolved peacefully; where torture, genocide, domestic violence and senseless war are only entries in history books …

Where men are fully accountable and take responsibility for their decisions …

Where men stand tall and are proud to be men, secure in their role and deeply committed to nurturing one another, their families, their communities and their planet.

Values:

Accountability    |     Authenticity    |     Compassion    |     Generosity    |     Integrity
Intercultural Competency    |     Leadership    |     Respect

Our Commitment to Ethics, Safety & Privacy

This Brotherhood has made a commitment to Safety. In the video above we say what’s true … sometimes building community is messy.

Men’s work often includes emotional vulnerability, and vulnerability can be risky.

Because of this, we make Safety one of our top priorities.

And, we acknowledge that there is no such thing as a 100 percent safe space.

Sometimes we feel beat up and bruised — both physically and emotionally — and we choose to participate anyway because the rewards are greater than the risks.  What we aim for in the ManKind Project are courageous spaces – brave spaces – where men feel safe enough to really bring their hearts … and risk telling the truth about themselves and their lives, even when it’s hard.

And as we state in the ground rules in all our circles and trainings:

  • Any man may choose to pass on any activity.
  • Any man can call ‘Safety’ and have the opportunity to share his concerns.

In all cases, we believe in personal responsibility.

We are responsible for being safe and helping to create safety for all of us.

I am responsible for determining what is safe enough for me.

I am responsible for my emotions, my reactions, my impacts on others, and my relationships.

We also collectively take responsibility for calling out negative impacts, setting boundaries, and making requests to create more safety … not just for ourselves … but for each man in the circle.

And in the ManKind Project we also know … that including our best efforts, not every group will feel safe to every man, and sometimes things go wrong.

Find the groups that fit for you. And take action when something dangerous or harmful happens.

We believe in rigorous ethical behavior – that we will not take advantage of another person’s vulnerability for personal gain. We believe in creating a community where men support one another, free from abusive, coercive, or unethical actions.

Resources for Ethics, Safety & Privacy

As a Brother, you will have access to the Community portal, MKPConnect.org, where you’ll find Safer Circles and Communities resources, as well as the MKP USA Safety and Ethics Policy.

These provide guidance, tools, best practices, and policies for co-creating a safe enough space, and actions to take if a safety issue is coming up for you. And finally, every person who accesses any of the ManKind Project’s online systems or websites is subject to our End User License Agreement. This agreement specifies our privacy, terms of use, and prohibited actions as community members.

Here are the basics:

  • We will never sell or share your personal information.
  • You may not use any private user information or copyrighted ManKind Project material for commercial or charitable gain.
  • We don’t allow illegal behavior, sharing of confidential communication, harassing, disruptive, or discriminatory behavior against other members of the community or against the organization.

If found violating our community guidelines, you may be removed from any or all our systems, and prevented from participating in any or all ManKind Project programs, including trainings, men’s groups, and community email lists or groups.

Declaration on Mental Health

The ManKind Project USA, our trainings and programs, are not a substitute for professional mental health services, medical care, or addiction treatment. We have a Declaration on Mental Health published on the MKPUSA.org web site. Please consult with your provider about whether a peer-support group might benefit you.

Not a Substitute, a Supplement

Every year, hundreds of men are referred to the New Warrior Training Adventure and ManKind Project Men’s Groups by licensed mental health professionals.

Why our trainings? We offer a unique opportunity for profound personal growth. Men come seeking support with issues of confidence and self-assurance, manhood and masculinity, isolation, marriage and relationship issues, negative self talk, lack of positive male role models, difficulty finding direction, confronting the past, learning to set boundaries, accountability, male shame … and much more.

Our process gives a man the opportunity to witness and support emotional risk-taking in a way that is 100% supportive and affirming. The reason many therapists and professional care-givers recommend the ManKind Project is because it can fill a space not addressed in most therapeutic settings: peer-support for men. Our peer support model encourages and builds on emotional intelligence practices, empathy, listening skills, and emotional risk taking in an environment without rigid gender socialization, competition, or performative masculinity.

How the ManKind Project USA is Organized

The ManKind Project USA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.  Like all nonprofits, we are required to provide publicly accessible documentation of our audits and finances. These are on the ManKind Project USA website

Organizationally, we are divided into geographical Areas across the USA. In August 2022, there are 22 Areas. Each Area has a Council of volunteer Role-holders serving the organization in a variety of ways: Area Steward, I-Group & Community Coordinators, Enrollment, Administration, Finance, NWTA Leadership, Society Leadership (Elders, Young Warriors, Men of Color, GBTQ, etc.), Intercultural Competency, and others. Many Areas also have Chartered Communities within them, focusing on invitation, men’s groups, and community activities.

We have an elected Board of Directors that holds the Mission of the organization as their purpose, and then empowers a small Support Services Staff to carry out the day-to-day business of MKP.

Support Service staff manages Finance, Administration, Training & Events Operations, Governance & Structure, Human Resources, Fundraising & Organizational Development, Curriculum, Intercultural Advocacy, Curriculum Development, Area & Society Support, IT Infrastructure, and Marketing & Communications. To do all this with a limited budget and minimal hierarchy, MKP USA uses a management system based on Holacracy. It’s a system of distributed authority based on Roles, Purpose, Authority, and Accountabilities. You can see what that looks like here. We rely heavily on volunteer support to help us fill the many Roles we need to operate.
