By now you know I love to read books. I love learning, expanding my mind, listening to podcasts, and watching TED Talks. Being plugged into a current of new ideas makes me feel like I’m doing something important.
And the truth is, my mind doesn’t know the difference between me experiencing the world passively or actively.
Last night, I met my younger self.
He didn’t know it was me, but I knew him. He was passionate, smart, engaging and full of life. He’s fallen in love with learning Japanese. When I asked I’m if he’d been, he said, “No.” He rationally explained that had rent to pay that required working a low-stress, low-wage job. But, the easy work gives him lots of time to read.
He used my words and thoughts, “I love learning, expanding my mind, listening to podcasts, and watching TED Talks. Being plugged into a current of new ideas makes me feel like I’m doing something important.”
The problem is that we can’t read and think our way out of our comfort zone. And outside of our comfort zone is where we transform, live a bigger version of our purpose, and find new parts of ourselves we never knew existed.
Hit reply: Are you stuck in your comfort zone?
I’m going to unplug; go into the world and find places where I can share my gifts outside of my comfort zone. Then I’m going to come back into my comfort zone to recharge, learn what I need to learn to solve real problems – mine, not just those from a book.
This will be small hero’s journey – separate from my comfort zone, go through an ordeal – have an adventure, and return to my comfort zone to prepare for the next journey.
My journey will begin on Thursday, March 1st and last until Sunday, March 4th. The next time I write I’ll let you know what I learned about myself and the world.
